LIFE SAVING

PROGRESS OF TAHUNA CLUB

The Tahuna Life Saving Club took advantage of the presence in Nelson during the New Year holidays of Mr J. W. Newport, an examiner of the Royal Life Saving Society from the Wellington Head' Centre, to send its members up for examination in the proficiency and bronze medallion tests. Only a small number could take advantage of the opportunity owing to a large proportion of the members being away on their holidays. A portion of the examination was conducted in the Municipal baths last evening when the swimming and diving tests were taken, and the remainder of the course consisting of the land drills and the reseusitcition worK ’'as completed later on. The classes of instruction were commenced by Mr J. H. Moore, but were later on taken over by Mr F. S. Bolton, the Club Captain, who is the holder of the bronze medallion. Mr Bolton presented the class last evening, at the same time taking his examination as an instructor, in which lie was successful. The following members of the club passed the examination for proficiency certificate and bronze medallion; Messrs E. Coote (deputy captain of the Club), 0. 0. Eothwell (lion, sec.) and R. B. McKay, while two junior members C. Sanders and E. Parker gained their proficiency certificates. As soon as all members return from the holidays, another batch will go forward for examination as practical life-savers, another Wellington examiner, Mr V. Allen, coming over for the purpose. It is anticipated that before the end of the season the majority of the Chib’s members will have qualified in all the tests. The Club’s uniform, a plain cream swimming persey with monogram, is already in evidence on the beach, as is also its new reel and gear. The Club is greatly indebted to Mr Newport for the time he has given to the members in instructing them in the proper use of the reel for lifesaving purposes.
