WINNING BETS TAX
WARNING FROM MR LANG (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, 6th January. The Premier, Mr Lang, declares that he has heard of a big company forming in Melbourne with £IOO,OOO capital to receive bets from New South Wales with ;the object of defeating the winning bets tax. He warned the originators that he would not hesitate to impose drastic penalties and would even if necessary prohibit the publication of betting odds. CIRCUMVENTING LEAKAGES SYDNEY, 6th January. It was authoritatively stated to-day that the Lang Government intends to license starting price betting shops and agencies throughout the Metropolitan area and in the country, and new methods of circumventing the leakage in' revenue through evasions of the betting tax are to be introduced. EFFECT ON RACING SYDNEY, 6th January. Mr J. G. Barton, a New Zealander, who arrived by the Marania, said that Mr Lang’s betting tax would most assuredly prevent New Zealand racehorses from coming to Australia. He pointed out that the margin of profit was so speculative that owners and trainers certainly would not find any encouragement in bringing valuable animals across the Tasman when taxation on winnings was so severe.
