FACED WITH BANKRUPTCY
STOREKEEPER’S RASH ACT
BDILDING SET ON EIRE (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Because he could see nothing but bankruptcy ahead, William Pole, a storekeeper, aged 35 years, set fire to his store and dwelling at Darfield. This he admitted before the Magistrate today when pleading guilty to a charge of arson. He was committed for sentence, bail being allowed in two sureties of £IOO and self in £IOO. The police said that the building was really owned by Donald Gillanders, and that the accused was a tenant. Accused had financial difficulties and could not make a success of the business. The fire was discovered before it spread far. Pole at first said the place had been broken into and fired by a burglar but later confessed to the police.
