LAWN TENNIS

NELSON CLUB’S TOURNAMENT THE FINALS The tournament was continued on Saturday when the weather conditions were good in the morning but a strong wind during the afternoon greatly interfered with the previous good standard of tennis. Beatson proved himself to be a player of some note, he having played many gruelling sets during the tournament, and his match temperament was always most pleasing. It was unfortunate that Dart and Beatson had to default in the men’s championship doubles owing to Dart’s departure from Nelson on Friday evening. The club is fortunate in having such promising young players as Misses Nancy Lee, Nola Townsend and Joan O'Donnell, all of whom showed excellent form throughout the tournament. Mrs McLaren was also playing a greatly improved and dashing game. The president of the club (Mr B. Trathen) presented the prizes at the conclusion of the afternoon’s play, and so ended a very enjoyable club tournament. Judging by tile complimentary remarks made by the visiting players and onlookers the committee is to be congratulated on its good work.
