PLUNKET SHIELD MATCHES AUCKLAND IN ASSURED POSITION RAIN SPOILS PLAY (By Telegraph—Press Association) DUNEDIN. This Day. The Plunket Shield match between Otago and Auckland was resumed, kOtago, which had lost eight wickets for 264, continuing its innings to bring the total to 323. Alloo played bright cricket for 37, and Lemin made 11 when he was run out. Hawkesworth carried his bat for a very creditable and useful 27. The match should have concluded early in the afternoon but rain caused a stoppage before lunch, and again caused abandonment of play for the day when it set in in the afternoon, Auckland having made 75 of the 128 runs required for the loss of one wicket. Auckland’s scores in the second innings were: Miles, b Blunt 31. Postles, ont out 29. Weir not out 14. Extra 1. Total 75. VICTORY FOR AUCKLAND DUNEDIN, This Day. With 53 runs needed Auckland resumed its second innings this morning, Weir (14) and Postles (29) continuing. Canterbury, by hitting up 519 in their second innings, made a splendid recovery in their Plunket Shield match with Wellington. Centuries were recorded by Roberts and Page, both of whom scored 116, and Talbot, Lester, Merritt, and Cromb also scored freely. Wellington, set with 383 runs to get to win, lost the valuable wickets of Lowry, Dempster and McLeod for 51: runs, so that they will be faced with the heavy task of getting 232 runs to win with only seven wickets. When Canterbury resumed their second innings to-day Wellington had to take the field without E. D. Blundell, who had strained his wrist. Gallichan fielded in his stead, but of course could not bowl. The bowling analysis was: Massey two for 98, Blundell one for 50. A. Newman none for 21. J. Newman one for 81, Crook two for 105, McLeod one for 103. McGirr two for 17. » Lowry .changed the batting order for Wellington’s second turn, going in himself with Dempster. Talbot bowled a maiden to Dempster, and Cromb went on at the other end.
