MARSHAL JOFFRE
IN A STATE OF COMA
UNFOUNDED REPORT OF DEATH
(United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright)
PARIS, Ist January. Marshal Jolire in the evening was still in the coma into which he. sank at 11 a.m. His breathing was so slight and irregular that it apparently caused the rumours of death at first current in the crowds gathered in the street. The sight, of weeping women and other visitors, including M. Millcrand, oxWar Ministerr of 1914, and Colonel Dos Mazes, Joffre’s Chief of Staff, departing in tears, and olher signs ol emotion seemed to confirm the report, which the Prefecture of Police declared correct. The report was broadcast throughout Franco, and was followed by the Marseillaise, after which the programme was abandoned as a tribute lo the marshal, whereupon flags on public buildings were flown at half-mast, and many tokens of mourning appeared. The report was not corrected lor an hour. Colonel Dos Mazes is officially inquiring how the rumour began.
