NEW YEAR'S DAY SPORTS

About 500 people /isited Lake Rotoiti on New Year’s Day when a sports gathering was he)d. Campers and visitors from far and wide stayed about the lake and had an enjoyable outing. The winners of the various events were as follows : Girls’ running race (weight-for-ga)e—’Miss Thomson 1, Miss Ingram 2. Boys running race (under 16) —J, PyeSmitii 1, Bathurst 2, Guthrie 3. Boys under 12 .years—Logan 1, Godley 2, Beath 3. Girls under 12 years—Paulinp Roberts 1, Heather Chamberlain 2. Girls under 16 years —Gwen Edlin 1, Jean Edlin 2.
Boys and girls (14 and under) —Bathurst 1, Miss Ingram 2. Girls’ boat race—Miss Thompson 1, Miss Ingram 2, Miss Chamberlain 3. Boys’ boat race—Chamberlain 1, Leahy 2, J. Pye-Smith (canoe), (fastest time), 3. Boys’ running race, under 12—Logan 1. Jones 2, Leatham 3. Boys under 16—Pye-Smith 1, Guthrie 2. BOAT RACE HANDICAP (about 10 miles) — Heather (J. Baxter) 1
Fleetwing (Roy Anstice) (fastest time) 2 o.l.Say (W. Mitchell) 3
Ten other started. The finish was very close, seconds only separating the leading boats. Ladies’ boat race (about 5 miles) — Dawn (Miss Ingram) 1, Travers (Miss Thomson) 2. All the others were close up. The prizes were presented by Mr W. Andrews and the winners heartily cheered.
