MAHANA’S FRUIT CROP
• GOOD PROSPECTS (From Our Own Correspondent) At this stage it is possible to give so ini' reliable indication of the crop prospects for Hie coming season; and in (ioing this, one must support the action of the branch manager of 'the Fruitgrowers’ Federation in refuting the statement from Christchurch which was n part to the effect that the fruit crop in Nelson was a particularly light one.
The present indications are for a crop slightly below the record 1930 crop. Cox Orange. Pippin, Jonathan ant Stunner will probably show an increase whilst tlieve will be a slight tailing off in Delicious, Dunns and Statesman.
The ciops are particularly clean and there should bo a large percentage avail able for export although there has been the usual visitation of the bronze beetle with the same disastrous results. The bronze beetle is our main trouble at the moment and every effort should be made to find an effective remedy. Rain is badly needed in the district and whilst growers are conserving the maximum amount of moisture in the orchards per medium of thorough cultivation there is a general shortage of water for household and stock use.
