MAHANA SCHOOL
ENJOYABLE CONCERT PRESENTATION TO RETIRING TEACHER The annual school concert arranged by the teacher and pupils of the Muliana School tool; place before a large audience of parents, past pupils and visitors. Twenty seven items, comprising recitations, folk dances, vocal solos, trios and part songs, and an original play entitled “A Midsummer’s Day s_ Nightmare,” providing a varied and in parts most amusing entertainment which was greatly appreciated. Roth the teacher Mr Beckett and the pupils are to be congratulated upon the excellence of the individual dents and the concert as a whole. The chairman of the committee, Mr C. H. Noble-Campbell, was in charge of the proceedings and immediately after the concert Mrs Noble Campbell presented each pupil with a gift- from a prettily decorated Christmas tree which had been erected in a corner of the schoolroom. The chairman then in a few words referred to the good work done by the sole teacher Mr Ucc.xot.t, during Lite time he had been in charge of the school. He regretted that cncumslances were such that Mr Bechethad found it necessary to hand in Ins resignation. On behalf of the parents and pupils he wished Mr Beckett every success in his new sphere as a missionary in Africa and then called upc.i a senior pupil Robert Wilkie, to present to Mr Beckett a travelling bag as a small memento of his •association with Mahana. .. .. , In responding, Mr Beckett said that it had always been, his desire to do missionary work in foreign holds and die opportunity had now arrived. Anove all things he valued the goodwill of the children and therefore he was pleased to know that the idea oE the pro sentatiou had originated with the children. , . At this stage supper was served l>y the pupils and a very pleasant evening terminated with the singing ot tne National Anthem Among those present was ffie Rev. R. T. Dodds who throughout the year has been in attendance orice a week at the school in order to give the scholars a Scriptural lesson.
