FOREIGN LANGUAGES ALTER LOVE

MAKING TECHNIQUE ON THE SCREEN Exigencies of language alter techniques of lovemaking on the screen, at least according to Barbara Leonard. _ Miss Leonard played the feminine lead in “Men of the North” in four languages. Each scene was taken successively in each language with different leading men, although the faillinguist remained in them all. Not only did she have to change languages, but techniques too, particularly in the love scenes. “The Frenchman talks rapidly,” she explains. “His words fairly tumble out. He is quick and impetuous. His love scenes take less footage. The German is slower —his speech is slower and the words arc longer—his love scenes have to be quite deliberate. The Italian lover is fiery and impetuous and his speeches are brief and staccato. The English lover .... well, he’s too well known to describe.”
