MOTUEKA
CALEDONIAN CONCERT
At the Majestic Theatre on New Year’s night the concert held under the auspices of the Motueka Caledonian Society, made a very fitting termination to a highly successful day—the “gathering of the elans'’ at the Domain Reserve.
The theatre was tilled to overflowing with an appreciative audienoje who showed their enjoyment of the various items on the programme by repeated calls for encores. 80111 c of the dances witnessed during the day were staged again in the evening and received with renewed enthusiasm. These were "Keel of Tulloch” Misses Mavis Burgoyne and Rita Miller and Aliys Gladys Smyth and Mr 1). Bothwell; Highland Fling, Miss Rita Miller; Shoauntriubhas, Miss Gladys Smyth; Irish dig, Mr D. Bothwell and Miss Margaret Kerr; Sailor’s Hornpipe, Mr D. Guild; fancy dance, MisS F. Taylor and Mr 1). Bothwell. Mr Hughie Smith gave several humorous recitations causing much merriment, “I want to go home to mama,’ “When Kona, played the bagpipes,” “Donal’ McTavisli,” “Tm a terror to laugh.”
Mr A. Guild played bagpipe selections; and solos, which were excellently rendered and won great favour, were as follows: Mr D. Bishop, “Jessie the Flower o’ Dunblane,” “Star 0’ Robbie Burns” (by request), “My Mary Sweet and Brown,” and “Siandard on the Braes o’ Mar”: and Miss Beatrice Avdon “Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond,’’ “Keel Row,” “Blue Bells of Scotland ” “Bonnie George Campbell”; Mrs L. Robinson. “Coinin’ Thro’ Hie Rye,” “Valley of Laughter” and “Mary o’ Argvle.” Wee Charlie Stewart, from Wellington, in true Harry Lauder style, kept his audience hilariously amused and war, recalled time and again with enthusiastic applause. His items Mere “Roamin’ in the Gloomin',” “She’s the Lass for Me,” “The Waggle o’ the Kilt,” “The Picnic” and a recitation, “An Address to Sir Harry Lauder.”
Accompaniments for songs were played by Mrs L. Robinson and Miss Fry and the piping for the dancing by Mr A. Guild. The Pipe Band played selections at the commencement of the evening’s proceedings. During an interval Mr dock Thomson (Chief) presented the prizes won during tiie day and in a few well chosen words thanked all the competitors, who had come from various parts of the Dominion to make the gathering a success, all artists who laid contributed to the programme and given everyone present a very enjoyable entertainment and tile large audience for their attendance.
The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and God Save the King brought a very happy evening to a close. Competitors, artists and friends were entertained at supper at Bowers’ sample 'rooms, where a pleasant hour was spent. Mr Erie Trevena proposed the health of the visitors, to whirl' Messrs D. Bishop, Foote, Hugliie Smith and D. Bothwell replied. Mr Milne. Nelson, proposed the health of the Motueka Caledonian Society and the Chief, Mr Jock Thomson, made suitable response.
