SACRIFICE NEEDED
ALL SECTIONS AND CLASSES APPEAL BY ARCHBISHOP ißritish Official Wireless) RUGBY, 29th December. The need for sacrifice in the face of one of the most serious ordeals with which Britain has ever been faced was emphasised in a sermon last night by the. Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Cosmo Lang, in Canterbury Cathedral.
Sacrifice, he said, must be made by all classes and sections, though it be the sacrifice of long-conceived opinions. There must be a readiness to view the situation in the light of existing facts. There must be sacrifices in industry and agriculture by trade unions; sacrifices rendered necessary in order to Secure for industry and for labour the mobility which was needed to meet th_e crisis of the time.
There might even have to be the sacrifice of advantages which certain sections of the community, quite rightly at the time, secured for themselves, but which were no longer consistent with right and fairness to the whole body of the people. There might have to be—though it was hard to say it—some temporary sacrifice of the standard of life deservedly won on a basis of the past when production and sales were assured.
There must be sacrifice in order to ease the recovery, of that basis in the future.
Not least, there must be sacrifice, especially among the wealthier, in expenditure on amusement and luxuries.
