ENTERTAINMENTS

REGENT THEATRE: “RAFFLES”

Out of the maze of romantic antiquity “Raffles,” the amateur cracksman, strides the screen again and was greeted by capacity houses at the Regent yesterday. Column undoubtedly makes the cracksman the most lovable role he has ever brought to the screen. Lady Gwen, portrayed by Kay Francis, is an innovation among Colman heroines, a gorgeous brunette and incidentally the first dark-haired leading lady* ever to play opposite that romantic hero.

“ON APPROVAL” COMING TO THE REGENT, SATURDAY

Frederick Lonsdale’s brilliant comedy with the original Aldwych Theatre London cast, the cast winch made “Rookery Nook.” “On Approval” from the pen of Frederick Lonsdale, ..considered by many to be England’s greatest comedy writer, is having a wonderful measure of success throughout the Dominion. Everywhere it is screened the results are the same, packed houses and roars of laughter, and according to the bookings this will be no exception when “On Approval” is screened at the Regent to-morrow at . 2.30 and 8 o’clock. If there are any shortcomings in the picture, it is in the fact that the laughs of the audience are so loud and so long, that at times they drown the following dialogue. If British producers continue to send out productions of the standard of “Rookery Nook” and “On Approval,’ there will be no need to tak about British quotas and other protective measures, to ensure British pictures having a ful run. The cast is .almost the same as “Rookery Nook,” Tom Walls is the irresistible, don’t-care, impecunious Duke of Bristol, Winifred Shotter as a charming woman, and Mary Brough, etc., in those kinds of parts winch made them so famous in “Rookery Nook.” It is sophisticated, ves, but a. wonderful night’s entertainment, chock full of humour and laughs.
