At the cricket ground,' Motuekn. on Saturday the Motuekn junior representatives defeated Golden Bay in a home and home match by 20 points to v 3. ■
In the first half the visitors held their own but as the game progressed the superiority of the local backs was apparent and the score in favour of Motueka gradually increased. The opposing forwards were of about equal strength. Spectators were given a good exhibition of football. Bays (Yellow) kicked off and Goodman* (Motueka) returned the ball to the line. A forward rush to the home 25 followed, and in stemming it Cook received a leg injury. He was replaced by Moffutt. From a scrum Becd slipped out the ball to Mantle to Everett and half-way was reached. The movement was then taken up by Newport, Holyoake and Fry, Bays forcing down. The Motueka (Black)' forwards attacked vigorouslv, Taylor and McLean being responsible for a further force down. Bryce smartly intercepted a Motueka pass and made off for the line, and missed a try by* not running on. Following a strong effort by Everett to break through, Yellows again returned and Ballantyne attempted a pot. From a scrum Heed sent Holyoake, Mantle and Newport to the line for a nice try.—Motueka 3—o. The visitors then had the best of the deal for a time, an infringement by Motueka costing them a score made by Gooch.—Bays 3—3.
'Holyoake.and Taylor shifted play to their opponents. quarters and a force down resulted. Rogers took the kickout and found touch near half-way. Holden carried on but was smothered near the line. Goodman nimbly cleared from a five yards' scrum. A forward rush by Motueka was checked by HarAvood;'and Bryce invaded. Following an exchange Reed marked and Ballantyne secured from the kick and lined in Motueka's 25. Just on half-time Reed secured and sent Holyoake and Newport away for another try.—Motueka G—3. Motueka opened the second spell by attacking vigorously. Goodman passed to Fry, who, after a good run, kicked to the line and Yellows forced. The leather returned to McLean thence to. Reed, Taylor. Fry and Holyoake, a try being registered near the corner.—Motueka «—3. Goodman picked up and dashed oil but was unable to finalise. The Blacks retained the advantage and from a scrum near the line McLean dived over. Motueka 12—3. Goodman again broke through but Holden secured and returned play. Later the ball went to Newport who dashed down the line and narrowly 1 missed scoring. Goodman once more was pr6minent by potting a goal.— / Motueka Kl—3. A passing movement by Reed. Goodman, Holyoake, Fry and Everett ended in a scrum in Bays' 25. Campbell secured and cleared. Motueka gave their opponents little rest, and in a further attempt, Reed to Holyoake to Goodman to Fry to Newport, the last-named secured his third try. Rowling converted.—Motueka 21—3. The Bay forwards put up a good fight but were unable to withstand the insistent attacks of their opponents and.before the whistle sounded time another score was registered by Kemp who picked up in the 25 and passed the ball to Henderson who crossed the line. Rowling converted. The game ended 20—3 in favour of Motueka. Mr J. Goodyer refereed the match.
