SHOPS DESTROYED
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
CAMBRIDGE, sth August.
In the early hours of yesterday morning a fire badly damaged two shops and a portion of a third in Victoria street. The three shops were under the one roof of a wooden building which was one of the oldest in Cambridge. The fire had a good hold when discovered. It started in the shop occupied by W. >Nan, a fruiterer and confectioner, and swept through the roof and back portions of the shops of W. M. Larkin (baker) and C. M. Crawford (outfitter). The two first-named shops, which were owned by Mr L. H. Nixon, of Cambridge, were badly damaged. The third, which was only partly burnt, was owned by Mrs Roberts, r.i Auckland. The concrete and brick walls separating the adjoining premises prevented a more serious blaze. The insurances on Mr' Nixon's shops were £6OO in the National Office. Mr Larkin's stocks and fittings are insured for £2OO in the National Office, and Mr Nan's for £l5O in the Commercial Union Office. Mr Crawford is also Covered in the New Zealand Insurance Office.
