TREATY CONTROVERSY

Bennett’s attacks on the Australian Treaty is growing stronger daily, and there is a complete cleavage among members of the Conservative Party. It is reported that a large delegation interviewed the Tory leader, and are said to have urged an ultimatum to the Premier of British Columbia (Mr S. F. Tolmie). Challenges to debate the merits of the Australian anil “Sockeye Salmon” treaties are fiyjng thick and fast.

Figures published on Friday show that Canada’s exports for the year ended .“50th June increased hv £147,000,000 compared with the previous year, while the imports increased by £lij(5,000,000. Exports to Australia totalled £20,000,000, an increase of £O,000,000. Exports, to New Zealand totalled £18,000,000, an increase of over £G,000,000. LUMBER TRADE VICTORIA (8.C.), 3rd August. Addressing a meeting at Port Alberni on Friday night, Mr Bennett asked why preference had not been granted to lumber from Canada when the Australifin Treaty was entered into. Australia was now buying more lumber from the United States than from Canada.
