THE RESOURCEFUL BOOTLEGGER
A KNOWLEDGE OF SCIENCE
A London business man who went to Helsingfors on a visit is filled with admiration for the technique of one bootleggei* out there. Jn the Gulf of Finland a dilapidated tramp steamer, crawling at a snail's pace, was pointed out to him as a notorious liquor smuggler. As the boat had obviously no chance of escape from the slowest of revenue cutters, the Englishman raised his eyebrows.
It was then explained to him how the trick was managed. The. liquor is not carried on hoard, but it towed in large sealed cans behind the boat—thus accounting for the snail's pace. On the approach of Government craft thp cans are released with a cork float and a large bag of salt attached to the m.
The weight of the salt carries the float down out of sight until such time as the revenue cutler h;ts assured 'itself of the complete innocence of the steamer. When the salt dissolves the float bobs up to the surface, and the cans are coilocfed again in peace and safety.
