REMOVING ALL TRACES

MURCHISON'S RECOVERY

Apart from scarred hillsides and the. big slip in th o Matakitaki Valley Murchison is fast removing all traces of the damage done by the big earthquake. The road from Nelson to .Murchison is generally speaking m first-class order. At one "or two points, however, where temporary deviations have been put in around broken bridges, care must be taken in negotiating the rough surface. Reconstruction work in the township is fast proceeding and the wreckage of Hodgson's store and tho twisted appearance of one or two houses are the only remaining outward signs of the shake. The work of putting a new front in the Bank of New Zealand is well forward.

Lake -Morel is the most striking achievement of the big shako and the general acceptance of tho new condition was demonstrated yesterday by the appearance on tho lake of a rowing boat containing a party of boys. The lake is of considerable, length and will no doubt take its place in the near future as one of the Nelson district's beauty spots. The rapidity with which the lines of communication in the vicinity of Murchison have been restored is a tribute to the Public Worlcs Department.
