PRISONER ASKS FOR FLOGGING

REQUEST REFUSED BY MAGISTRATE (By Telegraph—Press Association) HAMILTON, 2nd August. , A request for a flogging and a term of probation in preference to imprisonment was made in the Magistrate’s Court this morning by Leslie Alfred John Walters (25), who pleaded guilty to obtaining 30s by fraud from a Wellington boardinghouse keeper, T. G. Hayman. Accused had three previous convictions for theft, fraud, and breach of probation. He. told the Magistrate that his parents died nine years ago, ho being left to his own devices. • In response to Walters’s request for 25 lashes the Magistrate, Mr Wilson, said this was not in accordance wjth law, and in any case be would not grant the request. Walters was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment.
