Mr W. Is. Barnard (Napiei) gave notice to ask the Minister of Finance whether the provisions ol section 51 of the Land and Income 'Tax Act, 1925, providing for the imposition of 50 per cent. additional land tax on unimproved laud, as defined ill the same section, have been consistently eiifovcod, or whether the section has been allowed to remain entirely inoperative.
Mr A. Hamilton (Wallace) gave notice to ask whether Southland would be created a separate industrial district.
Mr J. O'Brien (Westland) gave notice to ask whether an investigation would be made in Westland, with a view of seeing what lands were suitable lor settlement there. The Wellington City Empowering and Amendment Bill was introduced and read a first time. WHEAT INQUIRY The Minister of Lands (the lion. G. W. Forbes) gave notice to move that a Select Committee be appointed consisting of ten members, to examine into matters relating to the wheat industry, and to report to this House us to:— (1) \\ hat are the advantages from a national standpoint of the policy of the Dominion being self-supporting as far as its wheat requirements are concerned. (2) Whether the wheat growers of the Dominion require protection or State assistance to enable them to market their product, in competition with the importations from other countries. (3) What form ol protection or State assistance, if any. would effect that obfect without unduly adding to the cost of wheat, flour, bread, fowl wheat, and wheat offals to the users. (4) Whether protection, if any. is required for the flouwnilling industry (5) Whether the costs of baking and distribution of bread to consumers tire reasonable or otherwise. The proposed members of the Committee are Messrs Jones, Bitchener, Waite Urr. McCombs, Maepherson, Wilkinson! •Jenkins, Lobbe, and the mover.
