NELSON COLLEGES
BOARD OF GOVERNORS MONTHLY MEETING HELD YESTERDAY At the monthly mealing of the Hoard of Governors 01 the- Nelson Colleges there were present: Messrs F. W. Hamilton (in the chair), F. W- Hic'hmond, i'. Best, \V. C. Hurley, J. Glasgow, F. W. Smith, W. Lock., C. H. Fell; and Doetors \V. I). Stoney-Johnston. and S. A. (jil>l)s. An apology for absence was received from Airs Childs. The Principals of both Colleges were also present. Accounts amounting to U 8649 tis 9d were passed for payment. The total comprised £2793 8s 3d for Buys' College, £1092 14s lid for Girls' College and C4YM 5s 3d lor general. Included in. the latter sum is me. cost of new properties purchased in Ngatitama street. Accompanying -Mrs Cliilds's apology was a recommendation that the, matter of overcrowding at the Girls' College he discussed and extra accommodation be arranged for in the way of temporary class rooms. A letter was received from the .Minister of Education stating that the Public Works Department had had plans fur extra accommodation at the Girls' College under consideration at the time of the earthquake, but that all plans had been suspended pending investigations to see that they wore suitable and that buildings were such as would be absolutely safe. The Board is to meet the .Minister of Education to discuss the matter on Saturday next. .Miss V. 1. Cockburn, a teacher at the Girls' College, was granted a year's leave of 'absence to tour Kugland and the Continent. Estimates for the repair of portions of the Hoys' College building are to be discussed with tin: .Minister of Education. .Miss .Mills, Principal of the Girls' College, submitted the, inspector's report on the Preparatory school. The report staled that the efficiency of pupils was good and that the inspectors were gratified at the. progress being made Tin! order, tone and discipline wen- very good. A vote of congratulation was passed to Miss Mills and her staff on the very film standard maintained both in the primary and secondary departments. Miss Mills suggested that on account of t?ie strain on the staff in the last term the second term holidays be extended so that the date, of reopening would be 17th September instead of 13th September. Mr Broad concurred with the i suggestion and the extension will now i apply to. both Colleges. Miss Mills reported the influenza epidemic had affected the attendances somewhat. The disease seemed to be of a more mild typo among the boarders. Mr C. H. Broad, Principal of the ■ Boys' College stated that the. inspector's i report on the Preparatory department was an excellent one. He suggested that : the very liberal donation, made by the Rugby Union towards the College's Pugby tournament expenses should not bo ■ accepted, mainly on account of the attitude likely to be adopted by other schools in the competition. Members of the. Board were in agreement with MiBroad on the matter. As regards the health of boy boarders ■ Mr Broad said: "Strange to say, in spite ■ of the weather, the boarders were never in better health within my memory."\ Applications for the position of groundsman were received. Mr T. Shawwas appointed to the position. ! The election of the chairman for the ■ ensuing year resulted in Mr Hamilton • being re-elected unanimously unopposed. Mr Hamilton returned thanks for his re-election. ' The City Council Engineer's report on the Scriptorium was referred to the Old Boys' Association. It was decided lo forward any further reports on the Scriptorium to the Old Hoys. Notification of the bequests by the late Mr J. E. Hounsell for the establishment of scholarships at both Colleges was received. It was decided to send a letjter of appreciation and thanks to Mrs Hounsell. It was resolved that letters of thanks bo sent to all citizens who helped in the emergency of the earthquake period, including 'those who billeted boarders, and Archdeacon Dart and the Church of Christ for the use of rooms.
A sub-committee reported in appreciative terms of the care of the boys in the temporary hostels, remarking on the "homey" appearance of the buildings in so short a time. The secretary was 'instructed to acknowledge many expressions of sympathy received from schools and other bodies all over New Zealand.
