A. E. ELLIS WITHOUT BIDE FOR WINTER CUP (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Young Thurnham was not on the Riccurton track to-day and his chance of starting in a race at Biccarton looks remote. Hyperion suffered serious injuries to one of his tendons when racing at South Canterbury last week, lie will require a long spell. Battle Colours lias given Campbell a good deal of trouble lately, and the Solferino gelding is to he spelled for seveVal months. The scratching of Merry Mint has left A. E. FJlis without a mount in the Winter Cup. He has been offered a ride on the. North Island gelding Tchoka, lmt so far he has made no definite arrangements regarding an engagement in the mile race at Biccarton. TAKANINI TRAINING TRACKS i '• (By Telegraph—(Special to "The MaiT’J AUCKLAND, 31st July. Witin a view to relieving Ellerslie as a training centre, and also to provide additional up-to-date tracks, a number of racehorse owners formed themselves into a company known ns the District Training Tracks, Ltd., for tho purpose of acquiring a property at Takanini and carrying the project into effect. The result to-day is the establishment of one of the best training centres in the Dominion, and the scheme has proved so successful that the Auckland Racing Club lias, under consideration a proposal to acquire the property. In 1925 the Auckland Racing Club entered into an arrangement with the District Training Tracks, 'Ltd., whereby the club agreed to subsidise Takanini tracks for five years, with the option of extending the subsidy for a further five years. The company offered the club at the time the option of purchasing the whole of the property at cost price. Recently tho committee of the Auckland Racing Club appointed a- sub-committee to report upon the efficiency of the tracks, and the general prospects of Takanini as a training centre. The sub-commit-tee has presented its report which is entirely favourable to the tracks, and recommended that the Auckland Racing Club should acquire the option to purchase. The report has been adopted and the option for purchase of the property is now undyc consideration. N.Z. TRAINER IN SYDNEY (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The mail which arrived at Christchurch from Sydney yesterday brought news regarding the Biccarton owinAtrainer J. McCombe, who has been laid up in hospital for the last few weeks. Two operations have been performed on him, and when -the mail left last week lie. was seriously ill. His daughter (Mrs R. S. Bagby) and her husband, intended to leave last week on their return to New Zealand, but their plans have been changed and they are remaining in Sydney with Mrs McCombe.
