CLOSING NGATITAMA STREET

(To the Editor! Sir, —No doubt there are some grounds for the objections which your correspondents have urged',against th 0 closing of tho above picturesque'street. But in matters of this kind one must take into consideration the pros as well as the cons and fairly weigh them against ono another. If l am correctly informed, the present Minister of Education has suggested a magnificent' scheme for the improvement of Nelson College which depends, however, entirely upon the acquisition by tho college of the piece of road in question. On the present line of road a series of fine hostels will ho erected and the present college building will be devoted to class rooms. It is not diflicult to imagine of what immense advantage to the College the carrying out of such a scheme) will be. Now I feel sure that the public of Nelson recognise the value of oair Colleges to the welfare and prosperity of our city sufficiently well to be willing to make a small sacrifice in one respect in order to secure a very great advantage in another direction? The street in question is of very little valuo as a street, but as a site' for a series of hostels for the College it could not be surpassed. ‘When the true position is realised I believe all opposition to the scheme will disappear. I am etc., OLD COLLEGIAN. Nelson, Ist August. .
