COMBINED MEETING-SAFE BATH ING AND BAND
A combined meeting of the JJlotuoka Safe Bathing Society am the Brass Band was held, in tho High School on Monday evening. The object of the meeting was to ascertain members views in respect lo th o ■proposed queen carnival. . , Major D. W. Talbot, who occupied the chair, commented on tho rather poor attendance, ..and expressed the opinion that it was an indication! that the holding of a function of this nature Was not being favourably received at present. Since the last public meeting ho had made enquiries in the surrounding districts regarding each district nutting up a queen; but on the whole had found residents disinclined, although promises had been given to assist in connection with the Motueka queens. Mr H. H. Smith pointed out thai ino earthquake had been responsible for a considerable outlay m most homes, cspeeially in Riwaka, where practically all chimneys had had to he rebuilt; the residents there were not in the humour for a queen carnival. Mr J. Wort, secretary of the Band, said that the Band had received benefit through the efforts of the Safe Bathing Society (40-60 of the proceeds of the Beach Gala) and he would liko to see reciprocal assistance as was intended. Mr Trovena also referred to the apparent lack of interest and suggested that the idea of a queen carnival be relinquished. Each party would then be free to pursue any course it thought fit. Finally it was' resolved (Messrs H. Smith and L. Holyoake) that the meetin" was of the opinion that it would not be° advisable at present to promote a queen carnival.
