BISHOP'S ADDRESS
TO DIOCESAN SYNOD cathkukal last night special service held Tiie special Synod service was held at the Cathedral last night and Iho President (Bishop Sadlier) delivered ins address. Alter referring to the King's illness, His Lordship paid a tribute .to the lives of several members of the clergy and laity who passed away during the year. .Mention was made ol Mr (I. A. Darkness, Mr Barker Saxton, Archdeacon llolmoii.se, the Rev. W. StC. Tisdall and Mrs E. J, Hunter-Brown. At the close of his reference to the last-named the speaker said: "It is .sincerely to- le hoped that (lie proposal to promote a memorial to such an unceasing and inspiring "mother in Israel" may met with the success which it riclily deserves." THE CLERIC Ah STAFF "The choosing of clergy to fill the vacancies occurring in the Diocese continues to be one of our perplexities," continued His Lordship, "although the applications for appointments have been greater in number than in preceding years. Wairau Valley has been filled liy the appointment of the Rev. L. Ives. The Rev. J. A. Jermyii, 8.A., has been inducted as Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Creymoutli, and the Rev. J. W. Bloyce as Vicar of St. John's, Westport. The Rev. 11. 0. Brickland has been appointed to Reefton. Owing to the departure fur England of the Rev. G. F. Neligan, I regret to say the district of Amuri and Hanmcr was vacant for some months. I ;:ui very much indebted to the Rev. .J. G. S. Bartlett for his valuable assistance during the vacancy, and also for ins help during the illness of the Vicar of Greymouth. At length Amuri was filled by tli u appointment of the Rev. E. B. Moore. This in turn left Granity vacant for some months until the arrival of Mr" L. J. Pfeiffer. Karamea unfortunately is still vacant. Perhaps before long, if all goes well, we may aga'in be in the position of having sonic young men in training for the ministry who will be able to give us assistance in case of emergency. J a the, meantime 1 am very sorry to sav that the Rev. J. A. Rogers, M.A., Vicar of Stoke,' has intimated to m e that he wishes to iesigu on the Ist October as he intends to go to England. The vacancy will be hard to liil and must be considered in the light of some of the problems which time and means alone can solve. The absence of the Very Rev. the Dean for a few months deprives this <-e?siou of his wise counsel and well-balanced judgment.' Mr C. W. Pitts-Brown will also be sorely missed. His splendid services to the Diocese a.s a member of tho Standing Committee of the Nelson Diocesan Trust Board, and as the Chairman of Committees have been gratefully recognised by us all. Another member who is absent is Mr J. J. W. White, of Blenheim. NEW ZEALAND BOARD OF ■MISSIONS The report of the Board of Missions at its forthcoming annual meeting will show that while the board will be able to meet its obligations there is nothing to spare. I regret this because, had we a substantial surplus, we should have been able to fulfil our conditional promise to assist the Melanesian Mission to meet its heavy liabilities, which have been rendered all the heavier by the accident to the steamer Southern Cross. The Church Missionary Society is very much in need of two new missionaries and is seeking for a clergyman to fill an important position in Karachi, India. I am thankful to God that the Diocese of Nelson has met its quota and that the Cathedral Parish is again at the head of the list for New Zealand. SOCIAL WORK I am glad to be able to report a slight improvement this year m the contributions to our work at WhakaievPa School and St. Andrew's Orphanage. 1 wish the improvement had been greater because thes e establishments need considerable help to enable them to meet the demands made upon them. In the case of Whakarewa the income from the Estate for many years past has not been half the amount required for the maintenance of the institution. I again mention this because of the constantly reiterated statements of irresponsible persons that the leases of the Estate are of untold'value; and this is too notwithstanding that the accounts duly audited are published every year.
