POST OFFICE TOWER

TO BE DEMOLISHED Following the big earthquake an immediate inspection of the Nelson Post Office, and especially the tower,' was made by engineers from the Nelson office of the Public Works Department. Later the departmental architect made a further inspection. The Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) telegraphed "The Mail" from Wellington last night as follows: "Decision arrived at to-day to take down Post Office tower in Nelson." It is understood that the inspection disclosed that the corners of the base of the tower had been cracked by a former 'quake. Looking along Trafalgar street from the Church Steps one can' see clearly that the tower is slightly out of plumb.
