ORCHARD INSTRUCTOR RESIGNS
WORK FOR FRUIT INDUSTRY position wrrif Auckland firm Retiring from the Government service at the- end of August, Mr W. H. Rice, chief orchard instructor of the Department of Agriculture, Auckland, is in become manager of the fruit department of Kadley and Company, Ltd., Auckland, reports the "Herald". Air Rice received his early horticultural training in England. Arriving in New Zealand, he continued practice in Auckland. ' He joined Ihe Agriculture Department in 1916 ami took over Ihe duties of orchard insLruclor for the Last Coast of llie North Island. Later, lie had charge, of Hie llawke.'s Bay territory. During (he 1924 fruit export sea sou 'Mr Nice represented the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation in South America. In (his capacity he. visited Canada and the United States, being on loan to the federation during the whole of the time he was away. Excellent work was accomplished by -Mr Rice during this trip, and his report was of great value to the export fruit industry. Appointed chief orchard instructor in Auckland in 1925, Mr Rice has been in charge of the Auckland district, since that time. During the 1927 season, the Fruit Export Control Board requested the Government to permit him jta supervise the export shipping arrangements at Wellington. His "wide knowledge has been of great advantage to the- fruit industry in Auckland, and he has given practical help to many orchardisls in the district. In tin; opinion of orchardists Mr Rice's instructional work was (if outstanding value and his efforts have helped greatly in building up the fruit, industry in the Auckland Province. He has shown capacity for all classes uf Organisation work, both in control of the districts where he has been stationed and in the specialised work which he has done from time to time. Mr Rice holds the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture's Diploma, in Horticulture and is a vice-president of the Auckland branch of the Diploma Holders' Guild.
