DAVIS CUP TENNIS

FRANCE BEATS AMERICA IN SINGLES BOR.OTKA AND COCIIET IN FORM (United Preas Awooiatton—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian Press Association) PARIS, 27th July. France made a super excellent start, in the Davis Cup match with America, in perfect weather. Borolru’s agility was the deciding factor against Lott. The Frenchman took the first set in next to no time, blit when Lott sited his initial nervousness, lie gave as good as he got. The American had the advantage in. the service and also utilised the lull, adding a cunning slice which frequently made the slm's certain winners. Borolrn'* however, was never driven from the net where he was most effective. Lott displayed extraordinary tenacity in. the second set, hut the third was the crux. Borolrn, beginning .badly, lost the service. The vast crowd was exceedingly excited until four games all. The Frenchman then speeded up and completely out-manoeuvred Lott whose backhand drives failed at critical moments. Tn the final set Borolrn concentrated on an early .break through, and led by 2 points to nil, but lie was beginning to tire. Lott seized the chance and aimed serves and returns at Borotra’s feet, and thus gained the lead of 4 games to 3. But a final assault on the American’s backhand, and superlative volleying by Borotra, won him four games in succession, ending in a love game to win the match. | In the contest between Cochel and Tilden, the American began with cannon ball strokes and incredible retrieves, but Cochel returned everything with utmost nonchalance. Th e Frenchman increased the pace in the second set whfen “Big Bill” seemed outclassed. Whereas Cocliet was faultless, Tilden Was erratic, and the result was never in doubt. It was all over in fifty minutes. It is not complimentary to Cocliet to say that Tilden was playing badly. Ho was playing well enough to reveal the champion’s armoury. When Tilden essayed a promising stroke lie found that his opponent, with effortless ease, reduced it to .futility. Tilden’s mind appeared an open, hook to Cochet. Tho American tried every variation of strategy and stroke but failed tn shake the Frenchman’s confidence, and heartbreaking accuracy. Allison and Lott will meet Cocliet and Borotra in the doubles. The results of the singles were ns follows :—Joan. Borotra (Franco) beat (1 M. Lott (U.S.A.). 6-1. 3-6. 6-4. 7-5, and Henri Cochet. (France) heal \Y T Tilden (U.S.A.), 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.
