NELSON RAILWAY SERVICE
TIUHUTK TO UHTHiINI: MKMIIKK A social gathering was held on Friday evening in the Railway Social Hall to bid farewell to Mr W. Hobbs, who has retired on superannuation. Mr F. C. Cullen, stationmaster in charge, presided over a large attendance of members from all hrifiic'hes of the service. The [irst toast of the evening was tlm King. In proposing the toast of the guest, Mr Cullen referred to Mr llobhs’ good qualities, which had marked his railway career. On behalf of the Nelson staff ho presented Mr Hobbs with a case -of i.oewe pipes and a silver mounted walking stick, also a rug for Mrs Hobbs, wishing them health for their well-earn-ed rest. Remarks were also made by Messrs 11. 11. llbrnblow, 11. W. Smith, .7. Galley, W. Johnson, S. Toon, and G. Pressly. Mr Hobbs suitably replied, giving a brief account of incidents that occurred during his travels when being transferred to various places. Ollier toasts honoured were “The Ladies,” proposed by Mr G. Bradbury, replied to bv Messrs L. Hutchison and A. W. Treguitlia. “The Visitors,” proposed hv Mr A. Rowe, replied to.by Mr Duns; ford, late locomotive foreman, Oamaru, now retired, and Mr Pliibbs, enginedriver, Hokitika. Mr Dunsford said he knew Mr Hobbs 38 years ago in Christchurch, where they worked together, but had not seen him since. Songs during the evening were rendered by Messrs IT. H. Hornhlow, J. FinInvsoti, Toon Brothers, G. E. Westrupp, W. Johnson, C. Taylor, W. Wereta, recitations by Messrs Dunsford, G. Pressly and R. Reid. Mr W. Wereta also rendered a liaka. A very enjoyable evening terminated with the singing of “Aid'd Lang Syne.”
