CHIEF EVENT TO FABRIANO (By Taleeraph—Proas Association) TIMAIIU, 27th July. The annual meeting of the South Canterbury Hunt Club was held at Washdyke in lina weather. The track was fairly heavy. There was a good attendance. Results: —- Hadlow Hack Hurdles, of 110 sovs; one and a half miles.—4 Carinthia, 10.1, 1; 2 Gala Day, 10.3, 2; 1 Zeuxis, 9.0, 3. All started. Won hv two lengths. Time, 2.52 2-5. Pareora Hunters' Steeples, of 120 sovs; two miles.—6 Diamond Jack, 9.7, 1; 2 Valves, 9.13, 2; 1 Silver Light, 10.13, 3. Scratched: Hyperon, Master Garland, Krassnoi. Won by two and a half lengths. Time, 4.29 2-5. South Canterbury Steeplechase, of 200 sovs; two miles and a half. —1 Fabriano, 11.5, 1; 3 Handy, 10.5, 2. Won without opposition. Scratched: Terehu. Time, 6.22. Levels Handicap, of 90 sovs; six furlongs.—4 *EI Ron, 9.7, 1; 1 Broad field, 9.2, 2; 2 Mount Boa, 9.9, 3. All started. Won by three lengths. Time, 1.20. Teschemaker Steeplechase, of 150 sovs; two miles and a half.—l Mataipuke, 10.3, 1; 2 Night. Raid, 10.9, 2; 3 Valves, 9.2, 3. Scratched: Hyperion, Silver Light, Tehaumii, Seabov. Won by eight lengths. Totalisator takings were £9682 10s, as compared with £12,213 10s Inst year. A FIASCO (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The South Canterbury Steeplechase was one of the greatest fiascos staged as a race for some time. There were only four starters and Tavamoa fell at the first fence where Oviflamb baulked. Oriflamb got over at the next attempt, hut had to try the first of stand double three times before lie jumped it. This was the- end however, as he baulked at the second leg of the double, his jockey landing over the iciice without the horse. He held on to the reins, hut did not persevere further. 'lbis lfilt. only two horses in the field. Handy led tor half the journey, hut Fabriano then took charge and never afterwards looked like losing. Ilaudy fell at the second last fence. He cantered round the back of tlie course, but, was caught by Ids trainer, B. P. Brooker and jumped the last fence to get second money. Fabriano has been a great stake earner for tlie well known trainer P. T. llognn, for whom he has captured three stakes this winter, besides getting place money on oilier occasions, including second i'n the Wellington Steeplechase. H. CAIRNS FATALLY INJURED (United Preaa Aaaooixtlon— By Slaotrio Telegraph—Copyright) i SYDNEY, 27th July. IT. Cairns, one of the best known jockeys in Australia and New Zealand, was fatally injured when liis mount, Quick Deal,* fell in tlie Gillibrand Hurdles at Mooney Valley yesterday. The horse sometsnulted at tlie last fence, its bindquarters crashing on the rider whose skull was badly fractured.
