BUSINESS YESTERDAY HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES KAHTJIQUAKH MATTERS (By Telegraph) (From “Thu Mail’s” Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, 2611 i July. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p. in. Mr Speaker announced that His Excellency the Govenioi'-Geimi'al will receive (lie Address-in Reply at 10.30 a.in. next Wednesday. Mr J. McCombs (Lyttelton) gave notice of his intention to introduce his Preferential Voting Bill. Mr G. C. Black (Motueka) asked tho Prime ..Minister if he would arrange for immediate, reports to he obtained regarding access to Corbyvale, and also in regard to the prospects of the settlement, so that an early decision might be arrived at in regard to the plight of the settlers. Mr Black also asked if a caretaker could be sent to protect Hie personal bolo-n'gings of the settlers and to cave for the stock. The Lani(s Department might also send an officer to protect the interests of the Department. Mr Black said that at Lycll, and certain places’around Murchison, pilfering had been going on. The Prime Minister replied that some reports as to the position had been received, and a temporary track had been provided for access. If a Government caretaker could proceed to Corbyvale there did not appear any reason why the settlers should not return. The Relief Committee at Kurainca would bo able to help the settlers if necessary. The Lands Department's interests at Corbyvale were not extensive. In the event of the settlers not returning Hie Department would take such steps as were deemed necessary. Mr Black: “Couldn’t a caretaker live out of the district?”
Sir .Joseph said inquiries would lie made regarding that.
