THE KING OF BIRDS
Once upon a time the birds desired to elect a king. It was decided that the one which could fly nearest to the sun should be chosen. The eagle outstripped all, but when even its mighty wings tired, and it could rise no higher, an insignificant wren which had concealed itself in the eagle’s plumage sprang into the air, and by ascending a few feet found itself acclaimed the victor. The legend has also been applied to the golden-crested wren in order to account for its crown.
