FAREWELL SOCIAL (I'Yoni ;i, (‘nnespoiidrid, A social gal tiering was held, in the Richmond, Baptist schoolroom on Thursday evening to bid farewell to Hie Rev. U. Every and Mrs Every who are leaving Richmond shortly. The schoolroom bad a cosy apgraranee, and was prettily decorated by (lie ladies of the eliureli. .Mrs Newport ably presided as chairman over I lie go Hiding. Apologies were read from .Messrs Watt and I’riee, and llie Rev. Mr Haslani, of the .Methodist, Clinreli. Sorrow was expressed at the Rev. Every's departure ,'ifler a stay of four years al Richmond. during which time Hie Baptist Church had grown under his ininislrat ions. .Mr Kershaw, from Nelson, represented the Nelson Baptist, ('liureli, and on behalf of the eliureli. expressed his appreciation of the untiring efforts Mr Every Had made in tilling Hie Nelson pulpit when opportunity occurred. The Rev. I\ .1. Haynes (Church of England) spoke in appreciative terms of tlm Rev. Mr livery's work, and particularly emphasised the work they had conducted together in the public school. Air Percy Haycock, secretary til' the eliureli, and Mr R. Black, hot It paid tributes to I lie Rev. .Mr’ lively. Several items were rendered during the evening. Solos were sung by .Miss E. Ileslop and Miss Winifred Lloyd. Mrs Hockey gave a. recitation and Mr Hayes Lloyd and his sister played a pianoforte duet.
Mr C. (ilidewell, one of the oldest Church members, expressed regret at the necessity of Mr Every having to relinquish his work on account of illhealth, and Imped that a six months’ rest would enable him to continue Ids work for the Muster in some other sphere. With a few well chosen words Mr (ilidewell handed the Rev. Mr Every an envelope- containing the regards of his congregation. The crowning event of the evening was tin* presentation of a beautiful mat to Airs Every on behalf of the Chilli'll. This mat was made by Mrs William Hart. (This lady has already made lilt) similar mats and the sum of Chill has been paid l»y her to the Missionary Society as the result of their sale). Mr Every, on behalf of himself and his wife, suitably responded. The mat was regarded by them both as one of Lite most beautiful and touching gifts they had ever received, lie thanked the Church members for the help they had given him in his work. His earnest desire was that the Church would continue to gain in strength, and carry on the work in the future in praver and faith.
The evening terminated with the singing of the well known hymn “Blest he the tie that Binds,” after which Mr M. McGhtshan pronounced the Benediction.
Supper terminated a very successful gathering. Mr Every will conduct his farewell service in the Baptist Church to-mor-row.
