Damage estimated at £6OOO was done by fire sweeping through a large portion of the Silvarite Glass Company’s premises at Camperdown, At one stage it seemed likely that the whole block would be wiped out, but the firemen effected a good save. A fireman was overcome by fumes while in th e blazing buildings, and was dragged to safety by liis mates. He was subsequently sent to hospital. Several .others were also affected. The police are inquiring into a mysterious fire which broke out in premises adjacent to Holliborne’s timber yards, Burwood, when a garage and two cars were destroyed, but a large stack of timber was saved through being saturated with water. LANDMARK DESTROYED PUKEKOHE, This Day. One of Franklin’s oldest landmarks, the Mauku store, was destroyed by fire this morning. The building had been erected for forty years and was occupied by J. Game. It is suggested that the outbreak was due to a defective chimney. When discovered the fire had a firm hold. Air Garvie and his wife made a hurried exit through a bedroom window, the only means of escape. Neighbours were summoned but were powerless in the absence of a water suppjy. Nothing was saved. 1
