CORRESPONDENCE An application for an electric wiring loan was granted. A ratepayer wrote asking that the Old Cemetery reserve be cleaned up. Oil the suggestion"of-the Mayor it was resolved that Poppy Day fund employees he put on to do this work." R. W. Martin, Kawai street, wrote asking if something could not be. done to stop stormwater from cutting away Hie hank on his side of the road. The letter was referred to the, City Engineer to do what was necessary. The, Waimea County Council wrote asking that the,‘apportionment of heavy traffic fees be the same as before. The request was agreed to. Alnginnity, Son and Samuel, on behalf of a client, wrote, making a counter-of-fer to the Council of a piece, of land for street widening in Queen’s Drive for £2O. The offer was accepted. Regret that the Council would not put a section of Nile, street East in a safe condition until a resident complied with the Council’s request was expressed in a letter from Magiunity, Son and Samuel. The City Engineer said tiie, resident had not done all that- was required in cleaning out tliei ditch. Councillor Afoynagh slated he was not satisfied with the. Engineer’s attitude and on hi s motion the matter was referred to Hie Committee to visit. Air A. Creed’s offer of a piece of land for £2O for splaying back the corner of Bridge and Milton streets was accepted. A letter from a resident in North road pointing out- the need for a footpath and stormwater drainage was referred to the Committee. Several residents of Welta street wrote about damage to their properties by flood waters from Halifax, Grove and Cambria streets. The matter was referred to the Committee to visit. The Hon. 11. Atmore wrote noting (he Council’s attitude towards the proposed road over Lewis Pass and stating that he bad referred the matter to the Minister of Public Works. N. IT. Frost’s application for gravel was left to the Engineer with power to act. 'Die Afaitai Bowling Club’s application for a rebate in rates was granted. Sub-divisional plans submitted by Mr C. Af. Hoult. were approved. An application by W. E. Hurt, Bntannia Heights, for permission to erect a garage partly on the roadway was granted pending the Council’s pleasure at a rental of £2 10s per annum. A letter was received from F. Svkes referring to the recent tire in Mount street and suggesting that the Council make a by-law setting a _ minimum distance between buildings in the city. It was resolved that, the writer be informed that in view of the present by-laws the suggestion is impracticable. C’OAfAIITTF.E OF WHOLE COUNCIL A meeting of the committee of the whole Council was held on 18th July. There were present: The Mayor (chairman). Councillors Russell. Watson, Wash bourn, AfcConchie, Huggins, Aloynngh, Page aiul Gibbs. The committee reported as follows: — (1) On letter from Mr G. At. Rout, requesting the formation of a footpath in Hampden street: (a) That some gravel he placed near his gate and also near Burnett's gate; (h) ns to ditch that they have no recommendation to make. — (2) On letter from residents Stanley Crescent and Maori road requesting improvements to the roadway: That a. turning place be made if possible at the top of Maori road and that Stanley crescent be closed to vehicular traffic from the top of the bill to Russell street and that the ruts be filled lip and a few loads of gravel placed where required. — (3) On letter from Nelson College governors requesting Hie closing and sale of a portion ofNgiititnma"street: That immediate, steps'lie taken for stopping the portion of Xga lit tuna, street required and for tlu* sale of the land. (Councillor Alovilagh voted against the recommendation ). — (4) On letter from Returned Soldiers’ Association as to Poppy Day funds: That the City Engineer ascertain if land can be obtained from Air A. A. Grace for widening Washington valley. — (5) As to costing clerk in City Engineer’s office: Consideration deferred till the next meeting of the committee. If was resolved that No. 2 lie struck out. that a few loads of gravel be placed where required and that the question of Stanley Crescent, be deferred to the next committee meeting with power to act. Councillor Moviuigh moved that clause No. 3 he struck out and said he was strongly against the road being closed. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. The report* as a mended was adopted. REPORTS CITY ENGINEER The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported for the fortnight as follows: Streets and Footways: Patching and ditching has monopolised the whole of the stall' and transport.—Drainage: A by-pass has been put into the Tasman street sewer near Norinanby bridge in order To relieve the pressure in time of flood. The Bridge street sewer was blocked and has been cleared. The Wood sewers are backed up and causing trouble in lower Tasman street. There is no blockage as far as can be ascertained. The trouble appears tu be the ejector.^—Reserves: The

The turbo alternator continues to operate very satisfactorily. It is now three months since the contractors handed over the plant and I recommend that the final payment of £512 15s be made. Thev have passed a credit, of £2O on the contract price for painting. As it will bo necessary to close the turbine down for at least one week for painting it will be advisable to wait until the summer months when the load falls considerably and the reciprocating sets will be capable of carrying on. GENERAL Councillor Moynagh complained that asubdivision:!! plan had been allowed to come before the Council for approval without the Certified Surveyor s declaration completed. The motion was .seconded by Councillor Page and carried. , In reference to clause No. 5 in the leport of Iliei committee of the whole council the Citv Engineer reported that he did not think it was absolutely necessary- to widen the road at the corner in question. Mr A. A. Grace bad agreed to allow bushes to be cut down to improve the. visibility-. A resolution was passed that Mr Grace be thanked for his permission for the visibility to be improved and that the City Engineet shift the fence and cut the bushes. On the motion of Councillor McLonchie the necessity for crowning a footpath in St. Vincent street to stop water flowing down it was referred to the CityEngineer. The desirability of making a connection between Locking street and Kawai street was stressed by Councillor McConchie, who pointed out that each of the interested parties was willing to give a little piece of his land to make the connection. It was finally resolved that, the committee visit Locking street with a view to making a connection between Locking street and Kawai street,, the City Engineer to report-.; The Council rose at 10.30 p.m.
