President Hoover announced that tho United States would not lay down three cruiser keels until opportunity had been given for consideration of the effect those cruisers would have upon the final agreement for parity which he hopes to roach with Great Britain. The President stated: "Mr Mac-Donald's statement .narks n new departure in the discussion on naval disarmament." Responding to Mr MacDonald's statement in the House of Commons tliat ho hopes to visit America in October, President Hoover declared: "The American people are greatly complimented "by his proposed visit. He will find a universal welcome." The President added that -Mr 'MacIh.naid had introduced "the principle of parity, .which we have now adopted and Us'consummation means that Britain and the United States henceforth are net to compete in armament as potential op-' poncnts but to co-operate as friends in the reduction of it.'' He asserted that the United States joins the British Premier in his efforts towards disarniimeiit in the same spirit of 'goodwill as ndicated by the suspension of the ecu--struct inn of certain portions of this year's British naval programme.
