NELSON BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD LAST EVENING The annual meeting of the Nelson Bowling Club was hold last evening, the President (Mr C. M. Collins) being in the chair. There was a good attendance, of members. The annual report anil balance sheet as printed wore adopted with the exception of tho Saturday competition portion which was left open for later dis cussion. ANNUAL REPORT The committee's annual report staled that tho. club's membership was: Active 87, honorary 45, life 3, associate 2; total 137. Season's Competition*.—The nan-play-ing of matches to the appointed tine is regarded as unsatisfactory, and the delay by certain competitors in completing i matches according lo schedule resulted in fixtures being so delayed that at the termination of the season some of the players were robbed of a possibility of becoming better placed. The' committee found it necessary to make certain awards, anil gave'the players with the best positions on the board the benefit of winning places. The committee recognise that 100. much time is permitted for first rounds, and recommend to tho incoming committee a. much shorter period lor llie earlier play and tightening up final games, thus giving the keener competitors an opportunity of bringing the competition to a definite! finality. Competition results were as follows:Senior championship, W. A. Dec; .junior championship, G. Bees; champion pairs, C. F. AsKcw, J. G. S. Bartiett; runncrs-up, V. Vitetta, Job. Vitelta. Lvell Cup, P. P. Wimsetl; runner-up, \i. I). Bannerman. Jacka Pairs: The prize fur this is annually provided tor by -Mrs Jacka in memory of her late husband. We regret very' much that owing to the sudden termination of the season ibis competition was not suiiieiently completed to provide a winner. In the circumstances Mrs Jacka has very kindly agreed to allow the donation lo go towards the Honours Board. Saturday Pairs.—lt is generally admitted tnat Saturday afternoon fixed competitions are the incut difficult to satisfactorily arrange. There are many and varied' reasons, viz. : (1) Players who prefer friendly games lo fixed matches; (2) players who enter and tio not or are unable lo fulfil the engagement ; (3) the many substitutes required; (4) forfeited games by lion or only partial appearance of rinks. The committee therefore recommend, in view of above reasons, that the Saturday Fours be deleted from, the competitions, and that special fours and pairs games be arranged from players who register for games on Saturday. Tho committee feel thai their recommendation will at any rate lead to discussion on Saturday games and bring about a satisfactory competition.

The Greens.—The Green Committee and caretaker are to be congratulated on the much improved conditions. Both at the New Year and Easter tournaments visitors expressed much satisfaction with the excellence of the surface, quite a pleasing feature lo expressions given the previous year. 'The heavy rolling of life greens has been well tested, and the result is out of all question highly satisfactory, and carried out with the care exorcised by the committee should continue to produce an excellent playing surface. Owing lo (ho heavy rains and sudden, cold after Easter the greens had lo be permanently closed. The finals in competitions were affected, but it was imperative to commence work on the greens to permit, seed germination before the autumn frosts. Leaper Shield and District Cup.— '1 hose were again won by the Maitai Club, the latter again after a play-off. In the former the number of games ware reduced to three per year of 12 links a-side. The committee recommend a continuance of this number, or a further alternative, the dividing of the competition into senior and junior rinks. Finance.—ln spite of heavy commitments, including 1 the painting of the Club House, the finances are satisfactory. The report concluded after expressing thanks to Mr W. A. Dee for the presentation of a beautiful collection of English badges; to Mr D. 11. Edwards for the presentation of his late father's bowls; to Mrs Jackson for handing to the club the howls of her late husband, Mr R. B. Jackson; to Mr E. J. Allen, for presenting a pair of howls, and Mr G. Bees a bowl hag for competition; to Mr T. Haldane for his efforts in arranging social evenings; to Mrs Smith "for her splendid services in arranging the afternoon leas" and the many ladies who helped; and to "The Evening Mail" for reports. 'The prizes for the various competitions were presented. Mr Collins, before vacating tho chair, thanked all for the support accorded him during his term of office. The balance sheet showed the club to be in a reasonable position. As far as the consolidated fund was concerned they had to thank many former members for the return of their debentures, hi this connection ho moved that a letter expressing thanks be sent to Messrs Buxton, and also that Mr Moycs, a farmer president, be made an honorary lifo member of the club.
