RANFURLY SHIELD
RETAINED BY WAIRARAPA MASTERTON. This Day. The first Shield match against Hawkes Bay brought a record attendance, including a large number from the Bay, a.well as visitors from other towns.* The day was fine and tlie ground in good order. The holders had the worst of .the play at .the start, but were the first to score, Booth crossing for a try, which was converted. The challengers then set up a hot pace and for a time broke (lie defence down. First they worked down the ground, and from a fine passing movement South got over,, hut th e kick missed, then Ruru kicked a penalty goal, and for the rest of the spell Wafrarapa were busy defending. In the second half the home side brightened up, and gradually wore' the Bay down. Soon, after the start a fine piece of passing ended .in Jury scorifig and Fuller converting, which made VVairarapa 10 points to 6 in the lead, and for the rest of the game the holders were always on top. The Bay defended strongly, but were palpably tiring, and. did well to prevent my addition to_th e score. South, Wilson arid Ruru shone on the igay side, and Cook, Irvine, Roach and ‘ Fuller were great players for the winners.
