HOBBS LIBEL CASES
A SETTLEMENT REACHED (United Prorfii Association—By Electric Telegraph—(Copyright) (Australian Press association.—United Service) LONDON, 19th July. It is aniiouiiced that the King's Bench division case, William Cooper llobbs v. the Nottingham ' Journal'’ claim for damages for libel, has been settled, the latter paying (lie agreed sum of damages and also all costs. The impounded documents have been released. Another settlement is also recorded in the case prsus the Glasgow "Sunday Mail,” which admitted that it had been misled and the accusations were untrue. The paper a Iso apologised, paying Dobbs compensation and costs.
llobbs, who was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in connection with the notorious Mr "A" blackmail charges, and who was released from prison at the end of last year, sued Severn! Liverpool and Nottingham papers lor libel in regard to stories of bis Ide published by (lieiu. The eases were heal'd in December last, and a farthing damages awarded. Against this Hobbs appealed dial Ibe verdict was against the weight of evident e, and a re trial was ordered by Lord Justice Seruttoa in March lust.
