TERRIFIC STORM
IN SOUTH OF ENGLAND LIGHTNING AND TIDAL WAVES MANY FATALITIES REPORTED (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) United Service LONDON, 21st July. Unprecedented tropical heat the day long had as a climax on the south and south-east coast, in London, and surrounding areas one of the worst storms, in sudden sharp ferocity, in living memory. There were tidal waves all round the const. Several people were killed by lightning and three drownings are already reported, while dozens of people wore injured. There was heavy damage Iti many places. A tidal wave at Folkestone, accompanied by a whirlwind, caused a panic amongst thousands of holiday makers. A terrific flash of lightning struck Slough dog racing stadium and threw spectators in all directions, six being rendered unconscious. Many people were buried under canvas at Ashdown pageant owing to the roof collapsing. Other casualties are reported from many districts on the south coast. There • were the strangest scenes on roads towards London last night. Motorists were forced to abandon long lines of cars on flooded roads. Railway bridges were flooded and trains were stopped. Saturday night shoppers everywhere were drenched. A number of buildings were struck by lightning.
