BOXING

STRIBLING BEATS COOK

(United Pree» Association—By Electris Telegraph-pOopy right) (Australian Press Association)

NEW YORK, 18th July

At Kansas City, before a crowd of 12.000 spectators, Stribling gained tho decision over George Cook (Australia) in a ten round boxing contest. The crowd frequently cheered the Australian for his gameness, hut the light was throughout slow and tedious to watch. Both men landed ’clean punches in every round, but there was much clinching and holding which caused lack of action. Stribling dearly outboxed Cook who scored in the fifth round only, all the others going to his opponent by an easy margin. In tho, seventh round Cook was knocked through the ropes and claimed that his back was injured, but he went on gamely. Stribling was twice (warned for holding in clinches, the referee having great difficulty in separating the men and in tho sixth and tenth rounds he wrestled Cook Ito the floor. The fight generally is described as uninteresting. MATCH FOR HEENEY NEW,YORK, 18th July. Heeney is matched to meet Vittorio Campolo, the Argentine heavy-weight, in Brooklyn on 31st July or 14th August, depending on the speed of Campolo’s recovery from a boil on his leg. Campolo won on a foul from Arturo Dekuh on Wednesday. TOMMY LOUGHRAN’S RECORD NEW YORK, 18th July. Tommy. Loughran, 1741b5, made his final appearance as a light, heavyweight and retired undefeated champion after giving James Braddock (1701bs), an unexciting but thorough boxing lesson in which the latter took two: out of fifteen rounds.

The fight was not especially dramatic, hut Loughran begins a- long sought attempt- at the heavyweight crown, leaving a perfect record behind him for ability and sportsmanship. Loughran showed practically everything a light-heavy-weight can do in the time allotted tho fight which was for charity. It was noticeably free from ohiectionable features.

The crowd, gave Loughran a tre incurious ovation at the end.
