PARTIAL RESTORATION OF MURCHISON AREA

MR STRINGER’S APPOINTMENT

STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR Speaking to a “Mail” representative to-day, the Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt), referring to the jpartial restoration of houses in Murchison, stated that the local committee desired that the'Public -Works Department undertake the work, •.Taut' r a f week or so later put up as an alternative proposal that this committee - should do the work in order to expedite matters. The committee’s offer was accepted and £2OOO was granted by the Central Committee at Wellington as the first instalment towards paying for the work. The committee desiring to get the work done as expeditiously as possible, appointed Mr Stringer as organiser, director and supervisor, giving him a free hand.

It has to be remembered, said the Mayor, 'that a very large amount of money is being expended each week in boarding refugees both in city and country, and the most economical course open to the committee was to appoint a first-class man who could combine the three jobs of organiser, director and supervisor,' and push the work through as rapidly as possible. It is estimated, provided sufficient labour is available, that this work of partial restoration will be put through in about three weeks. The Murchison Committee is acting as an advisory body while the work is being 1 put in hand.
