NOTES FROM RICCARTON NIGHTMARCH FOR SYDNEY (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail") CHRISTCHURCH, 18th July. The Hawkcs Bay jumper Bon Ayron, owned by T. E. Whelch, has arrived at Riccarton, where T. H. Gillett will prepare him for engagements during the Grand National carnival. He figures in the Grand National Steeplechase, but in tho meantime he has no credentials for this race. Lord Ranald was schooled over two rounds of steeplechase fences at Riccarton and gaye one of his customary displays of good jumping. His stable mate, Master Garland, who is only a novice, shaped well in a similar task until he reached the sod wall the second time, when ho slipped and fell after landing. He was remounted and completed his task in good style. The mishap was due to the slippery ground, and Master Garland gives promise'of making a usefui jumper. Arikiwai is in regular work, and he appears to be much sounder than he was fi week or two ago. He will not !be included in F. D. Jones's team for Sydney next week. The trainer's present intention is to race him at the ('hristchurch Hunt and Grand National ■Meetings, and if he comes through those engagements all right he may be sent to Australia later on. This however, is only a possibility. Gay Jim (G. Salt), Zenxis (E. Shaw), and Gala Day (I. Tilson), were associated in a school over three hurdles to-day. Gala Day showed the. way over the first two flights, but Gay Jim and Zenxis finished on stroifgly and just led Gala Day over the last hurdle. The p.ice was solid all the way and i.t was an interesting bit of work. The North Island hurdler Elysianor was outdoing useful pace work on ilie sand track at Riceaitmi In-dav. A. McCnulay left to-night 'for Wellington and will take his departure from there to-morrow on his way to Sydney. McCaulay will be the first of (he South Island spring contingent to arrive in Sydney, but others will follow during the next few weeks. His team will be headed by the rising four-year-old Nightmarch. who will have True Shaft, u year younger, as his mate.
