STAFFING OF SCHOOLS
MINISTER ANS7TKRS QUESTION (By Telegraph) (From "The Mail's" Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, 18th July. "Will the Minister of Education this session amend the regulations under the Education Act, so as to provide for the staffing of schools and payment of capitation fees to schooj! committees upon a basis of the average roll number, instead of average attendance as it ts at present?" asked Mr R. McKeen (Wellington South) in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Minister (the Hon. Mr Atmore) replied that as the, average roll was - over 10 per cent, more than the average attendance the adoption of the average roll as a basis for staffing would mean an addition of about 10 per cent, to the staffs of schools, other than sole teacher schools, for which about 500 additional teachers would be needed. The allowances to school committees would be similarly increased,'and the total cost would be approximately £150,000 per annum. It was therefore regretted that the suggested'change could not be made at present. At the same time it must, be pointed out that schools were staffed strictly in accordance with their needs, and that where it was shown that an additional loacher was necessary to reduce the size of classes, that assistant was supplied.
