DARING MONEY ROBBERY

SIGNED WITHDRAWAL SLIP SUM OF 12044 .INVOLVED A particularly daring' robbery, involving cheques and clothing to the value of U7UI). was perpetrated at Iviliara. Sydney, in broad daylight a few days ago. After breaking into a house one of the thieves presented cheques for Otioo at a city hank, and received C—•’>.'> in cash and a bank draft for C4OO. Recently Mr E. C. Emerton, who was in (Queensland, forwarded his bank passbook and a signed withdrawal slip payable to ‘‘hearer” for the sum of 0(144 Ids 4d, to a friend, Mr Johnson, of Killara, with a request that the money should he drawn on his behalf. Mr Johnson left the bankbook and withdrawal slip, together with an open' cheque for the sum of .£!) los, in his wardrobe when lie left his home for business in the morning. His wife left the house about 10 a.m. A baker who called at the house shortly after mid-dav discovered that a luadlight of the front door had been broken, and lie informed the police, who found that the contents of the house had been ransacked. The house was guarded until Mr and Mrs Johnson returned, about f> p.m. Air Johnson quickly discovered that t-lie bankbook and its valuable contents were missing. Seven suits,were also missing from the wardrobe. Inquiries were made at the Circular Quay branch of the Government Savings Bank, where Air Emerton had his account, and it was learned that the withdrawal slip and open cheque had been presented. Bank officials said that a man entered into the branch office about 2 p.m. and presented the passbook. He was told that the total amount stated on the withdrawal slip could not he paid immediately. “But I’m leaving in a few moments for the Malay States, and I must have the money at once,” the man said. Subsequently it was arranged that the man should receive the sum of £244 J3s 4d in cash and a hank draft for £401) on another city bank in settlement of the pass .book account. The open cheque was also cashed.
