CHASE FOR MADMAN
A IVAIMATE INCIDENT (By Telegraph—Press Association) W AIM ATE, This Day. Attired in pyjamas, and his feet bare, a madman ran amok in rain-drenched Waimate in the dead hours of yesterday morning. His capture necessitated desperate methods for he was powerfully built. The police were informed and after a long search, the sudden ringing of the hell of the Catholic Church was heard. The prolonged ringing of the bell attracted the police and several others, to the spot. Here they found the madman, and realising that he was dangerous, rushed him. After a struggle he was overpowered and taken to the lock-up. Between the time he escaped from the hospital and the ringing of the bell, the madman encountered the watchman of the C.F.C.A. premises, whom he chased and fought, the watchman being struck on the bead with his own torch which the man grabbed, and would have been in a bad way if the man had not ceased his assault and suddenly left him. The man, who is aged 23, has been committed to the Sunnyside Mental Hospital.
