TOBACCO GROWING
(To the Editor) Sir.—The following figures taken from the Government Trade Summary for 1928 will probably interest present and prospective growers. . The total tobacco imports in 1928 were:—Cut tobacco 1,499,5441bs ; plug, 599,4041b5; cigarettes, 1,297,1921b5; cigars 23,3321bs ; snuff 6501bs ; cigarette tobacco, 113,2421b5; leaf, 1.138,4551b5; t0ta1,'4.676,8191b5, of a declared value of £1.501,617, the declared value being the cost in the country whence imported, pips 10 per cent. This shows, in comparison with the figures for 1927, an inerecase of 121.574 lbs, and a decrease of £227,669 in value. Every line of manufactured tobacco shows a. decrease, the total being 517,2351b5. but leaf shows an increase of G38,8091bs over the previous year's importations. The declared value (see above) of the leaf was £124,524, which works out as nearly as possible at. 2s per lb. Add packing, freight ami other charges, and the import duty of 2s per lb, and the average cost will be well over 4s per lb. , Growers will be interested in comparing the quantity of New Zealand grown, and the prices paid for it, with the .above figures.—l am. etc..
