SHOT BY BURGLAR
A CHRISTCHURCH BUSINESS MAN ASSAILANT'S ESCAPE (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Da v. When Mr Edward Hammond,' of Hammond and Turner, hardware merchants Oxford Terrace, visited the firm's premises about 9.30 last night he surprised a man in the store at the back of the shop. He caught the' intruder, a young man, and was taking him to the front door to hand him over to the police when the captive drew a firearm and shot Mr Hammond in the bark. He then bolted to the rear of the premises. Mr Hammond managed (o struggle on to the footpath, where he called to passersby, telling them lie was shot. The police were at once informed, and when they arrived a thorough search of the place was made, hut without any trace of the man beincr found. Doctor Marks was summoned, and liter he had received attention Mr Flnminniul was removed to hospital. He is suffering from a wound in the back, )Ut his condition is not serious. He states that the man appeared to be ibout 20 years of age, with a very ialp complexion, was about (i feet in icight, and of very slight build. Later. Mr Hammond's condition is improvng though he is weak from loss of ilood. The X-ray will be used to locate he bullet, which grazed the left lung.
