RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION
MEETING OF PROGRESS LEAGUE RELIEF IN GOOD FAITH OF THE GOVERNMENT Advice was received by the Nelson Progress League a day or two ago "- >m the Marlborough Progress League that the la.ter had arranged a deputation to the Prime Minister for Friday next at Wellington on the question of railway •onstrin tions in the South Island. in consequence of the general criticism lately appearing in the North Island papers. A meeting had been called for (his afternoon to consider the question, but taking advantage of the presence in Nelson, of the Hon. 11. Atmore, who was leaving for Wellington again last night, the president hurriedly summoned the meeting for yesterday afternoon instead. This meant that country members were 'argclv unable to attend, but a representative gathering was secured. The Hen. Mr. Atmore attended the neeting later and discussed the question with the League. Those present were—Mr A. Gould, president. Messrs F. G. Gibhs, F. I. Ledger. W. Lock, S. I'. Clav. F. W. Hoggins. F. W. 0. Smith. W. J. Moffatt. Dr. Gibbs, Hon. W. W. Snodgrass. Apologies were're ; ceived from Messrs F. C. Page, H. R! Duncan, J. Colder, and P. Rest. After '.roing carefully into the matter the following resolution was passed:— That the Marlborough Progress League be informed that, relying upon the fact that the construction rf the main trunk lines was one of the main planks in the election platform of the party now in power under Sir Josenh Ward and in view of his declared inlent ion of loyally adhering to those planks, the Nelson Progress League refuses to cast doubt on the good faith of the Government by urging it to do v. hat it has promised to do and is actively engaged in doing. A copy of the resolution was landed to the Hon. Mr Atmore with the request that he place it before the Prime Minister on his return to Wellington. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Atmore for his attendance and a.ssistsnee.
