NOWHERE TO GO
SLEEPING IN THE PARK UNEMPLOYMENT AT CHRISTCHURCH PLIGHT OF SINGLE .MEN (By TeUgraph-Sueeial to "The Mail") CHRISTCHURCH, 15th July. Public demonstrations and speeches are suggested by unemployed single men as a means of bringing their plight before the citizens of Christchurch. At a meeting held to-day a resolution was passed expressing the dissatisfaction of these men with the answers given to their deputation by the Mayor, MiArcher, last Friday. A further resolution was passed to the effect that their committee should immediately draw up a plan having aa its object impressing upon all classes the men's urgent need of relief, and public speeches and demonstrations were suggested. These resolutions will be submitted to a 'general meeting of unemployed to-,lllol-row. One man expressed dissatisfaction today at the rate of pay of the Public Works Department. Another man contradicted this, and the general opinion seemed to be that if a man really wanted work, that offered by the Public Works Department was a great deal better than nothing. Another speaker expressed the opinion that the men who are receiving free meals should have the first consideration. Many of them had nowhere to eo at night, and some \vere even sleeping in the park. It was resolved, as a demonstration of what hardship actually existed, to ask the Mayor and councillors to attend at the soup kitchen and get first-hand evidence.
